u Value…what is it?

To the visual artist value is the pictorial element that identifies the lightness or darkness of a color. 

White has the lightest value; black, the darkest. All other colors fall somewhere in between. 

The Grayscale Value Scale at right was created by scanning the color chart above it...then converting it to black and white.  Note the even bands of grays verifying the accuracy of the color scale.

When working with brighter colors the eye and the mind are easily deceived.  Brighter colors will normally appear lighter than their grayed counterparts.  The brighter blues in the lower portion of the Color Value Scale illustrates this.

Color Value Scale - Lighter colors are nearer the top (higher values).  Colors become progressively darker toward the bottom (lower values)

Grayscale Value Scale - This scale was created by scanning the Color Value Scale (above) and converting it to grayscale.
